In architecture, design often begins with a required function, and the structure is then developed around it. In this project, the process was reversed: an artistic volume was created first, and function was assigned afterward. Several folding techniques were explored using A3 bond paper, allowing the volume’s qualities and spatial personalities to emerge. After careful analysis, the volume was assigned its most appropriate function—as a retreat study in a rural setting.
As part of the learning process, instructional illustrations were produced so the volume could be recreated by anyone, echoing the role of architectural drawings in communicating design intent to builders.
