Folding Space

One Crease

One Crease is an experimental folding technique developed in the architectural studio to explore how complex spatial ideas can emerge from a single planar surface. The sculptural form is generated from one diagonal crease in an A3 sheet of bond paper, then manipulated through poking, pinching, pulling and twisting subtly to arrive at its final form. A function is then assigned to the form; in this case, it is envisioned as a study retreat in a rural, vegetated setting.

The Inspiration

I was searching for a form that is simple yet complex—like nature itself: quiet in appearance, yet layered with intricacy. While walking through campus, I came across a decaying palm branch and was immediately intrigued by its form. As the days passed and it continued to decompose, it slowly warped into a new configuration, its sweeping curves etched with delicate, intricate ripples.

This observation led me to explore folding techniques that could emulate its evolving geometry and layered complexity.
